This onion pie is based off of a recipe from 1767 from the Primitive Cookery. It has been modified for a modern audience.
The original recipe included things like boiled eggs, apples, onions, nutmeg and more. It is more of a savory than sweet taste for a pie. Our version is below!
1 Pastry Shell (You can use pre-made or your favorite recipe), 4 Eggs, 1 Cup Ham Cubes, 4 Large white onions (3 if you have HUGE onions), 1 cup sour cream.
Chop up your onions and fry them with your ham chunks. This will caramelize and give a nice flavor to your ham. While this is frying, lay your pastry sheet into a deep dish pie plate. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Once done, put the onions and ham in your pastry shell. Whip together the 4 eggs and sour cream to make almost a quiche-like consistency and pour over the onions. Bake this in the over for 30 minutes. It will be brown along the sides and rise as it bakes.
Enjoy!
